Minnesota Pounds North Dakota 79-56
November 24, 2019

Focusing on an inside game, the Minnesota Gophers had no trouble beating the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 79-56. No trouble after the first four minutes, that is.

The Hawks built a 5-0 lead on a basket by De’Sean Allen-Eikens and a three-pointer by Marlon Stewart, but the Gophers scored the next 10 points as part of a 15-1 run to end any suspense by midway through the first half.

Taking only 20 shots from beyond the arc, a contrast to the 30 they fired in their previous game, the Gophers got more than half their points in the paint and shot better than 50 percent from the field. Gabe Kalscheur, with a combination of inside and outside play, lead all scorers with 18 points and had 3 steals. Big man Daniel Oturu had 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots.

Minnesota’s rebounding leader, with 9, was Jarvis Omersa, who also had 11 points off the bench. Marcus Carr also reached double figures, with 10 points to go with 5 rebounds and 6 assists.

North Dakota lost its fourth straight game, all on the road and against teams such as Gonzaga and Valparaiso. The Hawks return to Grand Forks on Tuesday.

Minnesota is now 3-3 and has tougher nonconference games coming up in the next week, against DePaul and Clemson, as it prepares for the conference opener, December 9 at Iowa.
